What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is defined by DETC as "certification by a recognized body that a distance education institution has voluntarily undergone a comprehensive study and peer examination that has demonstrated that the institution does in fact meet the established standards."

Essentially, accreditation is an ongoing process to guarantee that an institution provides the quality of education that it claims to offer. It is meant to provide certain assurances to students that the institution is operating on sound financial basis, has an approved program of study, qualified instructors, effective recruitment and admission policies, and advertises its courses truthfully.

Institutions that meet the minimum requirements may apply for accreditation review on a volunteer basis. Only those that meet the exacting standards of the review committee will be accepted.
